Back to Business.

Hello again!  I hope everyone had the best little Christmas ever, we sure did.  Things were very laid back and it felt good to get spoilt and not feel guilty about it. Now it’s back to business in blog land…

Some of you may remember I mentioned the movie "An Inconvenient Truth", a few weeks ago.  Well, i read something disturbing today, and it’s got me thinking and doing.

If you haven’t seen the film, I highly recommend that you do, it’s a real eye opener and like the advertisement for the movie says, "by far the most terrifying movie you will ever see.".  Al Gore talks about Global warming, how it was spun as a myth when in fact none of the data documenting the onset of global warming was ever in doubt by the scientific community.  After watching the film and reading the newspapers with a new set of educated eyeballs, I KNOW it’s not a myth.  The earth is damaged, and we are doing it.
Some of the ways I’ve started to ‘do my part’ (because everyone doing a little- equals a lot) are, purchasing recycled toilet tissue, sounds inconsequential but it’s not.  turning down the heat and wearing more clothes.  Turning off the lights and replacing the often used lights with compact fluorescent and perhaps in the future LED bulbs.  I don’t drive much as it is but when the weather permits I’m going to try and walk to more places instead of driving maybe even invest in a trailer for a bike that could hold the kids… I’ve also started recycling more whole heartedly, because that’s the easiest thing to do.

Anyway- here are some more ideas to try and do your part.  We’ve only got one planet and I’d prefer not to fry like an egg on it.

What ‘Green’ things are you already doing? What do you plan to do in the future?

Years ago my dad use to talk to a weather man at the spa, and he said our weather will be changing in so many years, that CA will have our weather, and we will have CA weather….now thats seemed a little far fetched, but i can see that it is already changing… I do recyle….and the best thing invented was those light bulbs that save electricity and money…..I have them in every room, including my outside lights. My light bill is $37 a month…..i use night lights through out the house…. of course I don’t have any kids using hair dryers, etc….but I agree and where will our polar bears go……

You always have such interesting posts Jenn. I love stopping by to visit….hope Paige and Nolan had a very merry Christmas….

Definitely got me thinking Jen. I think I’m going to see if Netflix gets this so I can see it!

Yes Jen our RECYCLE bin is showing signs of use from over the holidays.
I think everyone would be better off to even use the car trash can and not the window, have you ever noticed the roadsides ???

Glad to hear you had a nice Chrissy!

I haven’t seen the movie yet because I know it will make me so depressed and angry. I like to believe I’ve always been pretty green minded. Always recycled, always used recycled loo paper, never owned a clothes dryer, don’t use hot water in my washing machine, use those fancy light bubs, use public transport when I can instead of driving… We are in the worst drought in Australian history at the moment, so now we even put buckets in the shower with us and use the grey water to water the garden, and the washing machine grey water to wash the car.

BUT still I know there’s more I should be doing, or doing less of, in order to make the change that’s needed. Every little bit helps though, right.
Good on you for promoting it in your post!

OH, and DID NOT vote for our dumb, ignorant, self-important, old fashioned Prime Minister who refuses to sign the Kyoto Protocol!

This is very important, I couldn’t agree more! We can all make small changes and it adds up. We compost all our kitchen garbage, recycle almost everything and buy most of our clothes from thrift store or consignment stores. I know we can do more but at least we’ve made a start. Thanks for reminding us.

I really enjoyed the movie and one of the things I liked about it was that while it did outline a very real problem, it was also hopeful in tone. There are things that we *can* do. The most important thing we can do is to vote the right people into office.

But there are little things too. I also use compact flouresent bulbs. I keep the heat in my house at around 50F and then use a space heater by my chair and a blanket and a warm hat. I am much more comfortable than people think when I tell them that I keep the heat so low. I live close to my job. I knew that I would never be able to make myself take the bus when I could just drive so I chose to live close to my job.
